Anxiety and Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

NHS Choices simply defines Anxiety as: "... a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe."

As with many conditions many of us will suffer from it at some point in our life and it is often normal to feel anxious if it is happening infrequently and/or if we have important challenges to face. When occasional feelings of anxiety become more frequent it can start to become a problem and can lead to Generalised Anxiety Dirsorder (or GAD). For many this then has an overly detrimental impact which can lead to a negative and destructive downward spiral which we feel we can not control. Daily tasks which we used to find easy become harder which exacerbates the situation as we perhaps struggle to concentrate, lose motivation and/or lose control of our thought processes, our habits and our actions.

Symptoms of Anxiety and GAD may include:

Physical symptoms of Anxiety and Generalised Anxiety Disorder may include: excessive sweating; nausea; sleeping difficulties; headaches; irregular heartbeat; dry mouth; diarrhoea; painful or missed periods and tiredness.

Medication for Anxiety

Medication can help, and may be one of the first thing offered by your GP, although the side effects often outweigh the advantages. In many cases better results can be achieved through talking therapies, or a combination of the two. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy has been shown to be one of the most powerful taking therapies available.

Anti-anxiety medication will normally try and increase the level of one or more neurotransmitters in the brain which helps keep our worries and anxieties in check. However, the thoughts we have, the actions we take and the interactions we have also impact on these all important neurotransmitters, so we can do an awful lot to help re-balance the amazingly complex systems of our brains to help the medication work better or allow us to choose if we want to take them or not.
(Any decisions to start, stop or change the dosage of any medication should always be done in consultation with an appropriately qualified medical practitioner).
